Background & Challenge
The Beveren Tunnel, a vital underground transport link in the Port of Antwerp region, is subjected to harsh environmental conditions. Exposure to heavy traffic, industrial pollution, de-icing salts, and moisture ingress over decades leads to chemical degradation of concrete structures—primarily driven by chloride penetration and carbonation.
To optimize maintenance budgets, prevent catastrophic degradation, and ensure structural safety without unnecessary full-scale rehabilitation, the asset managers required a precise quantitative assessment of the tunnel’s remaining service life.
The Solution by Sanacon
Sanacon, a specialist spin-off in concrete degradation and structural durability, performed a comprehensive material investigation and service life calculation tailored specifically to the Beveren Tunnel.
Detailed On-Site Inspection & Sampling: Core samples and non-destructive testing were carried out across critical zones of the tunnel lining to evaluate existing cover depth, carbonation depth, and chloride concentration profiles.
Advanced Material Analysis: In their specialized laboratory, Sanacon determined key physical and chemical parameters, including concrete porosity, migration coefficients, and binder characteristics.
Probabilistic Service Life Modeling: Using advanced durability models (such as fib Model Code 34 / EN 1062 frameworks), Sanacon calculated the initiation phase of reinforcement corrosion. By factoring in environmental exposure classes and local microclimates within the tunnel, the team simulated future degradation rates under various exposure scenarios.
Key Results & Impact
Accurate Life Expectancy Data: Asset managers received a clear, data-driven timeline indicating when critical corrosion thresholds would be breached.
Targeted Maintenance Strategy: Instead of costly full-tunnel overhauls, interventions could be planned precisely for specific high-risk zones identified by Sanacon.
Cost Optimization: By shifting from reactive repairs to predictive maintenance, the project extended the safe operating window of the Beveren Tunnel while minimizing traffic disruptions.
Through advanced diagnostic testing and predictive modeling, Sanacon delivered a reliable roadmap to safeguard the Beveren Tunnel’s long-term integrity and operational continuity.
